What is Therapy and How Does It Help?

What began in the 19th century as an exploration of the mind’s inner workings, evolved over time into the modern-day discipline of psychotherapy. Therapy is a process that uses a person’s thoughts, behaviors, and insights to create change. In fact, we know from brain studies that therapy can actually change a person’s brain. Amazing!

There are a lot of different therapy techniques. Many people have heard of CBT or Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and many have also heard of psychoanalysis, EMDR, trauma therapy, among others. Some therapists specialize in a specific therapeutic modality. Others, like me, are versant in a number of modalities and work with the client to individualize their care.

Whatever therapy you’re using, it’s always okay to ask questions and learn what the therapy is and how it works. I know that I love sharing the hows and whys of therapy and how it helps!
